DC trip: Roomies, Pork Rinds, and more Stunt Artistry

A postponed trip that finally happened!

I planned on going to DC last March, but my San Francisco project intervened. Now that I'm free, it's time to revisit...

A pretty evening to depart Central Oregon.

One redeye later, I'm walking into Rob's DC apartment!

Rob was a submarine captain, so I have to write him up for stolen valor (NIMITZ is an aircraft carrier).

We was boyz, tighter than ticks, for 3 years at the Naval Academy. Roomies for Life!

A walkabout around the dumpster fire.

Always a pretty sight.

Literally in Rob's backyard. 100 yards away!

A rooftop pool is never to underestimated.

Road trip to Annapolis....what is wrong with these pictures from Union Station?

I'm looking at the sign for car rentals....I proceed...into the indoor retail area. After I circled twice, i realized that the parking area is in the opposite direction...the above and below signs face each other!!!!

And I had forgotten how little fun is to be had driving thru DC!!!

First up are awesome classmates Erica and Dave.

Seriously? They have cappuccino in the dining hall, and now a coffee shop inside Gate 3?

So soft.

Our intrepid mascot William...

Ah yes....the Halsey Hack. Running on the indoor track years ago induced many a breathing problem!

The city docks, just steps from the Yard. Nice to be downtown mere minutes after jumping the Wall (yeah, as if I ever did that!).

Midshipmen driving back to school from the northeast will drive down the appropriately named "Oh Shit Hill" (because that's what we groan when coming over the crest and seeing the campus in front of us).

A five year (first) reunion!!!! Aviator Kelly is 87+2 tons of awesome...we've been Facebook friends for years and finally met.

My first soft shell crab sandwich in years....I mean decades.

Gotta visit Arlington. Always a profound day.

Genuflecting is in order for all those who learned from him.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. You can't help but be moved by the gravity.

I always visit the astronauts: Columbia, Challenger, Apollo 1.

Gus and Roger died in that terrible fire.

CC's plane broke over Defuniak Springs Florida, where my Seminole Indian grandfather was born.

Colonel Irwin was the Annapolis roommate of one Jack Kane, USMC, whose son John is my good friend here in Bend. Irwin was also known for a less important reason: he was the 8th man to walk on the moon.

Both parents of classmate Mike are resting here as well. I approve of the elder male Cantwell's first name.

If you look up 'badass' in Webster's Dictionary, you'll see the name Basilone.

New Year's Eve 1999, I'm driving to a party in Raritan, Basilone's hometown. It's cold, foggy....as I make the turn from Somerset Street onto Gaston Avenue, I'm struck by the sight of the Basilone Statue backlit in the fog, so I dash home, grab my camera gear, and snap this picture as the millennium turns. A local boy, war hero, with the Stars and Stripes hanging nearby.

I'm pretty damned proud of that photo.

The Air Force Memorial is the last thing people on American Flight 77 saw before they hit the Pentagon.

The International Spy Museum!!!! Definitely should be on everyone's list to visit.

Captain Joe and his code breaking during WWII.....The island (and water supply) of Midway

She was super intelligent, and no sense of humor. I would have given her royalties.....Signed, Mel Brooks

Dinner at Kinfolk on the Waterfront began with the most amazing Pork Rinds. Gawd....

I surprised Rob by polishing his stainless appliances to Navy standards.

I TOLD you the ballpark was in his backyard!!!

Got a free ticket courtesy of my VA ID....

and left the game early to get my money shot from the apartment roof.

This waterfront fish market had the goods...

Ended that trip, and began another...a drive to Ashland to help the Stunt Artist get her inventory out of storage.

This sweatshirt from the Spy Museum seemed appropriate for her.

A fun couple of trips!!
